The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Administrative Tribunal

In 2022, the administrative judiciary celebrates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) – the direct institutional predecessor of the Supreme Administrative Court.

Established in 1922, the SAC was the first administrative court with nationwide scope in the history of the independent Polish State. At the same time, administrative courts of the first instance also operated in the area of the former Prussian partition – the Voivodship Administrative Courts in Katowice, Poznań and Toruń. The Supreme Administrative Tribunal and the Voivodship Courts, through their case law and, among others, the academic activity of judges, contributed to the development of legal science in Poland, including in particular the development of administrative sciences.

The purpose of the 100th anniversary and related events is, among others, to remind posterity – us contemporary generations of citizens – of the glorious history of the Polish judiciary, the corps of outstanding judges and officials sitting in the Supreme Administrative Tribunal and the Voivodship Administrative Courts, their activities for the administration of justice and the legal order of Poland in the interwar period.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, on August 3rd, 2022, the President of the Supreme Administrative Court, Jacek Chlebny, opened a special exhibition devoted to the Supreme Administrative Tribunal on the 100th anniversary of the adoption by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the Act of August 3rd, 1922 on the Supreme Administrative Tribunal. The exhibition was organized in the former building of the Supreme Administrative Tribunal at 22/24 Miodowa Street in Warsaw, where the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy is currently located. The substantive concept of the exhibition was developed by NSA employees in cooperation with the Archives of New Records and the Institute of National Remembrance.

Celebrations related to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of administrative courts in the Republic of Poland are also organized in other cities where voivodship administrative courts operated in the interwar period. On September 6th, 2022, a ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice, which was a summary of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of administrative courts in the Silesian Voivodeship. In turn, on September 26th, 2022, jubilee celebrations took place in the Voivodship Administrative Court in Poznań.
